With the invention of photography in the 1800's, the idea of freezing a moment in time has continued to stir our imaginations. From daguerreotypes to Brownie Cameras, Polaroids and now digital SLR's, the evolution of the ability to capture colour, light and images has been extraordinary.
Many years ago, when I began developing my own black and white photographs in a darkroom, there was always a touch of magic when the picture first began to emerge from the solution. The same anticipation exists now, although instead of chemicals and mixing trays we can now view our photos instantly on HD TV's and high resolution computer monitors.
To date, the response to the Douglas Hood Photography e-commerce website has been very gratifying:
The Art Works Gallery writes - "With an interest in the play of light and movement, many of his works expose the illuminated pathways of the urban dream. Reflections, patterns, the mundane of the cityscape are given first billing, revealing subtle nuances and shadow plays. What one finds in a Hood work is an interest in fine detail, where it may be sometimes difficult at first to understand what is represented. His rich, abstracted colour fields are a joy to behold."
Gregory Booth, Freelance Photographer relates - "I absolutely love a lot of those photos, especially some of the more abstract, mysterious ones."
Melanie Mortenson Photography - "Your photos are beautiful!! Very abstract....nice work!"
Matthew Hood, Photographer/Cinematographer for the National Geographic film "Lions of the Lakeshore" and the Animal Planet 6 part series "Roaring with Pride" - "I'm very impressed with the amount of strong images you've compiled ... really nice use of natural light & beautiful bokeh. There are some really beautiful shots!"
Suzanne Diamond, Field Botanist - "Wow, your pictures are a feast for the eyes and soul! I love them all - especially the water/flower ones and the spectacular blue glass one - they satisfy a thirst with their rich lusciousness!"
This photograph is an extract from a time-lapse sequence I created that was featured by Nikon Canada on their website on January 28, 2016.
This is a single image from one of the three time-lapse sequences I photographed that are included in the National Geographic production titled “60 Seconds in Vancouver” which is #5 of a series “Guess Where You Are in 60 Seconds." Each of the time-lapses I did consists of about 120 photographs, with one sequence being shot on Granville Street, and two at different ends of Water Street – they appear at 15, 10, and 9 seconds respectively on the screen 60 second countdown. There is also a brief “cameo” taken of me with my camera and tripod while we were filming at the Vancouver Lookout (appears at 17 seconds).
The video can be viewed on the National Geographic website: http://video.nationalgeographic.com/video/travel-source/60-seconds-in/151218-episode-5?source=relatedvideo
This photograph was one of three of mine recently sold through the Art Works Gallery to Mosaic Homes, one of the leading developers in the Greater Vancouver area. It was printed on acrylic (40 x 60") and looks stunning where it is on display in their exclusive Freemont Riverclub, the centrepiece of their Freemont Green, and adjoining Freemont Indigo complex. This development will consist of approximately 800 townhouses and condominium units when completed.
This is one of the three images of mine selected by the City of Port Coquitlam in their recent art and photography contest. All three of the photographs have been printed on large banners and will continue to be displayed on all of the major streets, parks and bridges throughout the city for the next year.
This is one of several photographs for the Presidential Suite at the Marriott Hotel in Vancouver.
This photograph was one of my recent sales through Art Works, to an Interior Design firm as the showpiece for the lobby of a new condominium development. It was printed on canvas (36 x 56") with a rich resin finish, & a floating black frame. The designer related that the client "was thrilled" with the result.
This is one of four of my photographs that were showcased in their contest on page three of the Vancouver Sun newspaper on January 5, 2015, in their feature titled "Bright lights, big city." The Vancouver Sun has a daily circulation of approximately 500,000 people.
This is one of the photographs selected by the Art Works Gallery in Vancouver for their exhibition titled "Elements." It is on display as an acrylic print, but is also available in other mediums such as aluminum, canvas, and resin finish.
This photograph was recently provided through Art Works to Artemisia, a luxury 21 suite development in downtown Vancouver. Artemisia was created by the Boffo Construction Group, developers of prestigious properties over the past four decades. http://www.artemisiavancouver.ca/

This photograph was featured on Global TV on their 6 pm newscast on January 29, 2014. I took it on Granville Street in downtown Vancouver, British Columbia, using a 30 second exposure to capture the ambiance of the night scene and the light trails from the buses and cars. Three of my images were selected to be televised, and I was also awarded the prize of a Samsung Galaxy tablet.
